About Serre Chevalier

A south facing valley stretching between the Col du Lautaret and Briancon, Serre Chevalier is a group of 13 villages in France's Hautes-Alpes department. Each village has its own character, but what pulls them all together is the genuinely friendly atmosphere. Many residents live a traditional mountain life year round, but welcome visitors with open arms. You can pick their brains over the amazing heritage of the area over a vin chaud or baguette. Briancon, a large working town, is full to the brim with art and history, and has a beautiful ‘old town' with cobbled lanes and ancient buildings.

Villeneuve is a purpose built ski village with central access to the slopes and traditional cobbled streets which give it a real French feel. Likewise Chantemerle gives you great access to the ski area, and Le Monetier draws crowds to its famous hot steam baths. The water is released at 44 degrees Celsius, and then cooled for use at 36 degrees - perfect to sooth a tired but happy body at the end of the day. The whole area has a fresh, sunny, unpolluted environment, a product of its mixed Mediterranean and Alpine climate.

Serre Chevalier has a good mix of skiing, with many runs for all levels through tree-packed valleys. The forests are amazing, choc-full of century old larches and many different kinds of pine. There are good beginner slopes, lots of varied intermediate runs and enough red and black pistes to keep an expert happy - even if it doesn't have quite the scope as some of the other ski areas. There are also easily accessible stretches of off-piste powder.

For beginners

Beginners have good village skiing and easy lifts.

For intermediates
Intermediates have the best of it as blues and reds cover the whole area but there is no danger of accidentally straying onto anything too tricky.
For the advanced
Advanced skiers have loads of challenging reds, long blacks, mogul fields and virtually unlimited off-piste through hidden valleys and glades.

Après Ski

Après-ski in Serre Chevalier is fun and can be lively, but never gets really rowdy. There are good bars dotted throughout the villages, with Villeneuve being the liveliest. La Grotte and Le Frog bars are usually filled with people celebrating the day, The Bar Yeti offers an excellent après-ski atmosphere as do the Kitzbühel, the extreme bar and the nightclub La Baïta. Other options are: Central Bar, Auberge Mont Prorel, Eden Extreme Bar, L'Escapade  and Alpen Bar. For a more relaxed after ski time, try some hot wine, pick up some fresh bread, stroll through the villages in the sun and pick one of the many restaurants for dinner. Le Passé Simple restaurant will fill you up with traditional local recipes and mountain dishes. For something a big more upmarket, try Restaurant La Maison Alliey for seasonal, locally-sourced produce served impeccably.

Off the Mountain

There are so many interesting things to do in Serre Chevalier, you may find it hard to force yourself to go skiing.  At Briancon you can skate at the Olympic Ice Rink, swim the pool or try the sauna and Jacuzzi. Six outdoor tennis courts are situated just a ten minute walk from the town centre to keep you fit. Serre Chevalier's main library is located in Briancon at 63, Grande Rue but each of the four main villages has a library of its own. If you're muscles ache, head straight for Le Monetier Les Bains and the indoor and outdoor pools (natural hot water at 37°C) with a magnificent view of the mountains and glaciers. Go all out and try one of the three balneotherapy spa baths. If you'd live some more pampering, head to the Beauty Centre for face and body treatments, luxurious scrubs, wraps and toning treatments. Discover the ancient history of the area with heritage workshops and guided tours which reveal ancient Roman ruins, a fortified town, old mines, lime kilns and more. Also try: Snowshoeing, ice driving circuit, snow-shoe walks, paragliding, snowkiting, skijoring, horse-drawn carriage rides, ice climbing, sea water therapy centres, gyms, courses, concerts, lectures, shows, sporting competitions, bowling and theatre.
