About ValloireBuilt around a 17th century Baroque style church, Valloire is a large resort with a 150 km ski area. Made up of three separate parts (Le Setaz, Le Crey Quart and Valmeinier), it's a traditional village with good snow cover. Nestled between the Three Valleys and the Italian border, the lightly wooded terrain is varied and some of the runs are as long as 1,000 vertical metres! With 70 per cent of the ski area above 2000 m, and 300 snow cannons pumping out snow, and mainly north facing slopes, Valloire has a lot to smile about when it comes to the white stuff. The 1300 inhabitants make the atmosphere warm and friendly, and there's some good après-ski options for those who like to blow off some steam after a hard ski. Delicious French and international cuisine will tempt you taste buds, as will some lively bars and clubs. This crossroads where the Northern and Southern alps meet has a wide variety of gentle greens, progressive blues and burning blacks to keep everyone happy. Try the wooded trails of Le Setaz region or the wide runs perfect for cruising in Valmeinier. Valmeinier itself consists of two areas, 1500, a traditional village, and 1800, a purpose-built region with convenient ski-in/ski-out accommodation and an ideal spot for beginners and intermediates. For expert skiers, Valmeinier is home to an Olympic run, and the third region in Valloire, Crey du Quart, offers some tough black runs, good powder and off-piste skiing. Valloire is home to a snow park, and has 25km of cross-country trails. If you time it right, make sure you catch the Valloire snow and ice sculpture contest, where sculptors from all over the world meet during three days and three nights... For beginners
There's a great choice of runs for beginners both for starting and progressing. They can quickly get a 'feel' for the peaks on the nursery slopes around the 'Thimel' mountain restaurant. You'll particularly enjoy the fact that there are nursery slopes at the top of the mountain making them snow sure (and a softer landing.)
For intermediates
Intermediates have a good choice of runs with many blues and reds including some blacks that may be within the means of a capable skier. You can enjoy the entire area from Valmeinier 1800 right across to Valloire and Les Verneys. For the advanced
For advanced skiers, there are some challenging blacks at Le Crey Rond, which is also well known for decent powder. The extensive off-piste and powder possibilities are wonderful with a local guide; the powder remains untracked for days. A great uncrowded area, offering high calibre skiing. The long 'Cascade' will test many experienced skiers, and there's also a Snow Park & half-pipe.
Ski school
Three well-known ski schools are on hand at Valloire to give you a helping hand. More than 100 instructors are on hand to take collective or individual lessons in alpine skiing, snowboarding, cross country skiing, free-style, ski touring and snowshoeing. Valloire offers both a chilled and a lively atmosphere in the evenings, depending on what you're after. Whether you want to eat some local 'savoyardes' specialities such as fondue, raclette and pierrade or a variety of Italian dishes at La Pizza, restaurants suit all tastes and budgets. There are around 15 restaurants and dozens of bars, most of them open until 2pm, such as Bar Centrale and the infamous Irish Pub L'Atelier. After that you can hit the clubs - open all night. It's reasonably priced to go out whatever you do - so make the most of it!
Off the Mountain
Off the mountain you won't be bored, with all kinds of sporting and cultural delights. The village has some good shopping, bowling alley, sports centre and an ice rink. Alternatively visit a working farm to buy the local Beaufort cheese or try spotting the chamois on snowshoe outings, go parapenting or try a microlight flight. There are 5 kindergartens while teenagers (10 to 99!) will be keen to visit the Adventure Park. Not done yet? Try the guided walks. Dog sledding, fitness centre, martial arts, cinema, library, exhibitions, bowling, cultural centre, Christmas market or snow and ice sculpture contests.

By air
The closest airports to Valloire are Chambery - Aix (100 km), Genève - Cointrin (130 km) and Lyon / Saint-Exupéry (195 km). Airport transfers
By train
The nearest railway station is St Michel de Maurienne. You can jump on a direct train from Paris to St Michel (4 h 30) every Saturday and Sunday during Christmas holidays and February to April holidays. Otherwise you can get a train from Paris to Turin - station Saint Jean de Maurienne every day and then transfer by coach. Other alternatives are a train from Paris to Chambery and a direct transfer from Chambery to Saint Michel and then to Valloire every day. Direct night trains also run from Paris to St Michel - Valloire (7h), every week-end. By car
Take the A43 motorway to St Michel de Maurienne (17 kms) from Valloire, and then take the D 902 exit.
