Skiing in Sweden is a completely different experience to skiing in the Alps. Nestled in unspoilt wilderness, most resorts are surrounded by forests, crystal-clear lakes and fjords. The dense mountainous area hold resorts that are smaller scale than many of the large purpose-built resorts in the Alp's but offer a peaceful, relaxed holiday, especially for families and those who want do more than just ski.
There's a massive range of winter sports on offer, including snow-mobiling across frozen lakes, and cross-country is very popular here, because of the unique scenery. Most of the resorts will suit beginners and intermediates best, and with a more low-key après-ski atmosphere than France, award-winning ski schools and plenty to do off the mountain, Sweden offers the perfect family ski holiday.
Probably the biggest and best known resort is Are. Sitting at the edge of a stunning frozen lake, the sunny resort has 100 km of pistes, with great intermediate terrain and some good off-piste. Smaller resort Vemdalen has the county's best ski school, and is great for families and beginners. It's linked to Bjornrike and Klosjo, and has 58 km of marked runs, above and below the tree line.
The après-ski scene is less frenetic than many of the resorts in neighbouring countries, mainly based in hotels, bars and cafes, with live bands playing in the larger towns. There is plenty of culture though - the Swedish people are very friendly and welcoming, and will offer you simple but hearty traditional foods like smorgasbords, meatballs, reindeer and smoked fish. You might want to wrap up here mid winter - temperatures can tend to the freezing side, but in spring it can stay light till 8 pm, meaning long, long days on the slopes.
