About Les Deux Alpes

Les 2 Alpes, sitting high up in the French Isere department, is France's second oldest ski resort, and it has built itself up to become a resort with much to offer on every level. The south-facing slopes make for a sunny reputation, and it claims to be home to the largest skiable glacier in Europe, which means year round skiing. Les 2 Alpes also boasts one of the wickedest snowparks in Europe - boarders will love the half pipes, multiple kickers, boardercross, gullies, canyons, hips, gaps, quarters and all kinds of rails.

The resort is fairly sprawling, with two villages Vensoc and Mont De Lans sitting at either side of a long main road lined with shops, restaurants and bars. It is easy to get around though - it will take you around 20 minutes to walk the length, or you can hop on the free shuttle bus. The après- ski scene at Les 2 Alpes is legendary, with a huge variety of bars, pubs and clubs filling up every night. Les 2 Alpes is an expert's delight, with steep couloirs, black and red runs galore, wonderful off piste and leg burning chutes. The beginners will also be happy with the amount of open green runs for them to learn on.

Intermediates may get a little frustrated however, as some of the blues are more difficult than they have been labelled, and there are not many easier reds to progress to. In a reversal of the usual mountain layout, the steeper and more challenging runs are lower on the mountain, while the easy beginner slopes are found at the top of the gondola at the wide, gentle glacier pistes. Beginners shouldn't be nervous about heading up - you can catch the gondola back down to the resort once you're finished instead of attempting the more difficult run back. You can also catch a funicular railway tunnelled under the ice to the 3450 m summit where you can take in the cavernous view of Mont Blanc (100 km away!), L'Ape d'Huez and the Plateau de Vercors. Though it can get a little crowded, with a top skiable elevation of 3600 m, sunshine-filled days, a giant glacier, leading terrain park, awesome après-ski, challenging pistes, fantastic snow and scenery, Les 2 Alpes will remain a leading resort for many years to come.

For beginners

Beginners should head to the top Glacier du Mont de Lans, a series of gentle slopes and great views. Les 2 Alpes is a good place to learn: there's a huge choice of good ski schools and slow draglifts near the village. You'll also find a roped off beginners' area at Crates. No need to be nervous of the run down to the resort, relax on the gondola which will take you all the way back down.

For intermediates

If you're a newly-minted intermediate you'll find lots of fun here - the runs around the glacier are green - blue level and there's some great snow for you to push you self in without fearing bruises if you fall over. Be careful of some of the blue runs here as they can be harder than they have been graded. More confident intermediates might find it hard that there are no easier reds to progress to, but there's always the option of a day trip to one of the neighbouring resorts included on the ski pass.

For the advanced

Expert skiers - this is a mountain for you! You'll have a massive playground of blue and red runs before you, like the challenging slopes of La Fee and off-piste territory of La Grave. The Grand Couloir under the Bellecombe and the Rachasses couloirs will satisfy your steep cravings too. The off-piste possibilities are endless, including the vertical descent from the top of La Toura to the village of St Christophe.

Ski school
Learners get the best treatment here, there are so many ski schools that they must compete to prove that they are the best choice. The European Ski & Snowboard School has a good reputation is Les 2 Alpes, as does the French Ski School (E.S.F). The British-run Easiski has friendly, enthusiastic instructors.
Après Ski

If you're into an après ski venue to die for, you'll find some of the best at Les 2 Alpes. There are numerous bars and clubs and guests to Les 2 Alpes seem to get very involved in the partying scene. Most of the bars are located in the centre of the town. The full moon parties draw a lot of people to the resort. At this event (which occurs in Les 2 Alpes just a few times each season) you take the last lifts up the mountain at around 4.30pm, ski/ board as the sun sets on the glacier and enjoy a lively meal in a mountain restaurant. Then, after nightfall, ski back down towards the resort, over a drop in altitude of 1300 m with only the moon to see by. There are 30 bars, open until 2am and three clubs that are open until about 5am. Joes is a great British bar right in the heart of Les 2 Alpes, Rodeo-Bar on the far side of town is a rowdy popular bar, also try The Boardroom and the Boom-Boom bar. For clubs, try L'Opera, Bresilien and the Avalanche which has a great atmosphere and regular DJs. There are more than 60 restaurants in Les 2 Alpes with a wide variety of cuisines. You can find restaurants serving everything from fast food to crêpes all throughout the town. Most of the restaurants serve traditional French cuisine - fondues, raclettes, tartiflette, pierres chaudes.

Off the Mountain

The resort is pretty happening off the slopes. Venosc is probably the more charming village with its cobbled streets and crafts, but throughout the resort there's lots to do. Try the sports halls, outdoor swimming pools, an indoor swimming pool, sauna, Turkish baths, an outdoor ice rink, wall climbing, dance, ice climbing, ice sculptures, paragliding, snowmobiling, cross country, snowshoeing, snowskate zone, frozen waterfall climbing, solarium, squash, tobogganing, tubing, night skiing or the cinema. You can also visit the ice cave at 3400m. The grotto was dug entirely by pickaxe and it now contains many ice sculptures.
