About La ThuileLa Thuile is a lesser known Italian resort - but that doesn't mean it doesn't have its charms. Sitting in the south west of the Aosta Valley, it borders France, and you can jump on a lift over the border to the French resort La Rosière. The resort boasts great views of the giant Matterhorn, Monte Rosa and Mont Blanc peaks, and offers 150 km of slopes. Because it is not that well known outside Italy, during the week the slopes can be blissfully uncrowded. This is a great spot for beginners to take their first shaky turns. Learners have their own area at the bottom of the mountain with its own lifts, so they can practice away from the bustle of the more advanced skiers and boarders. For beginners
Beginners will enjoy La Thuile. They can start out on the nursery slopes at village which are served by a drag lift and a button lift. They can then head up the gondola to Les Suches at 2200m, which has snowsure beginner slopes and easy blues to progress to when they build up confidence.
For intermediates
Intermediates will love the wide range of runs in the powder fields above the trees, and then classic narrow runs winding down through the forest. One of the best runs is the 11km piste number seve from the top of Chaz Dura down through woods and past mountain huts, old military outposts and forts. There are 13 black runs in La Thuile and La Rosière to keep expert skiers happy. There are some steep black runs, long wooded runs and plenty of off-piste opportunities. Run number 25 descends from the top of Belvedere diving down into the valley at the base of the Fourclaz Express chairlift and is worth a rip. However, if you are an expert skier looking for lots and lots of challenging kilometres you won't find them here and may get a little bored. Ski school
The main ski school at La Thuile is La Scuola di Sci di La Thuile. There are 63 instructors who will guide beginners round the many good nursery and easy blue slopes on the mountain. There are also a great option for those looking for a challenge - let them guide you to the best off-piste skiing spots. There's a special children's area with two free magic carpet lifts for learning to ski. A mini club for children aged four to 12 operates from Christmas to Easter in the village. Après Ski
There are around 30 bars and restaurants in La Thuile, but the resort has more of a family-friendly vibe than raging night spot. That said there are lots of fun, unpretentious bars to let your hair down in, like La Bricole and the Cage. If you want to step it up a notch you can head to the Fantasia Disco for cocktails and dancing into the night. The restaurants are of excellent quality. Try fresh homemade pasta and pizza from La Lisse, a chocolate pizza from Le Rascard or fondue from La Raclette and La Bricole. Delicious deserts include home-made ice cream or chocolate tometta and chocolate fondue from Chocolat. You can also ski over to France if you have a hankering for a lunchtime crepe! Off the Mountain
The fully restored spa centre of Pré-Saint-Didier will help you relax off-slope with various massage treatments, sauna and Turkish baths and expands over 500 sq m. The water emerges with a temperature between 30 and 40°C (86 to 104°F) from the ground inside an artificial cave, situated at the bottom of the Gorge of Pré-Saint-Didier, 10km from La Thuile. In resort there's a large swimming pool in the Planibel complex and other gym facilities. The village also has about 30 shops but otherwise there's not a great choice of non-ski activities. You can head to the large swimming pool in the Planibel complex, or the fitness centre, pool tables, table tennis, cross-country skiing, squash courts, climbing wall, ice climbing, snowshoeing, bowling and walking trails.
