About Geilo

Geilo, in southern Norway, sits against the stunning backdrop of Hallingskarvet, the largest mountain plateau in Northern Europe. Halfway between Oslo and Bergen in the upper Hallingal Valley, the scenery is stunning.

There are two main ski areas, with a bus that links them. With blue and green runs everywhere, this is a great place for children and beginners to learn how to ski. There's a quality ski school, very few queues and the pistes are gentle and wide to help build confidence. All levels of intermediate skiers and snowboarders should be happy here two, with a good helping of both easy and challenging red runs. Geilo has five black runs, but in reality there's not really too much to test expert skiers.

Cross-country skiers will be in heaven with 220 km of well-prepared and well-marked trails throughout the resort. Snowboarders enjoy the three great snow parks, home to Norway's biggest superpipe. The resort also appeals to winter sport lovers - it is known as one of the best locations in the world to practice kite skiing.

The pleasant mountain village was Norway's first ski resort, and is full of tradition and culture. It has a quiet and unrushed atmosphere, perfect for getting away from the stress of daily life. Après ski is relaxed and quiet during the week, and more lively and colourful on the weekends. Take some time to discover the farming culture of Geilo by visiting one of the many farms in the area, or visit the Viking graves at Fekjo. The area is also known for its high quality axes and tools, and you can visit one of the many factories to learn how these traditional products are made.

For beginners
Geilo has the right mix of uncrowded slopes and relaxed atmosphere to make it a beginner's haven. There's a good choice of wide open confidence building runs and reliable snow to provide soft cushioning! The ski school is recommended and the specific nursery areas are excellent!

For the more confident there's lots of testing red slopes. And best of all - no lift queues so you can get as much practice in as possible. The snowboarding parks are set up for beginners and intermediates as well as experts, so you can feel confident to try out a jump or two
For the advanced
Geilo has average offerings for advanced skiers and snowboarders. There are seven black runs including challenging mogul fields and some excellent off piste, but you may tire of the gentle runs if you are here for a long holiday.

Après Ski

There's a good selection of restaurants, cafes, bars and pubs (and even a couple of clubs) in the village, which are relaxed during the week but lively at the weekends, when Norwegians arrive to ski and party. The traditional live folklore music and dance is great to see, keeping the whole family entertained. Much of the nightlife takes place in the hotels, like the relaxed piano bar in Dr Holms Hotel, Skibaren. A younger crowd heads to Barock'n Orkesterbar for dancing and live music. The restaurants are varied and generally good value. Try some local specialties at Restaurant Hallingstuene or go bowling and dining at the same time at Bowl and Dine.

Off the Mountain
This is a friendly town with many activities geared towards families off the slopes. Visit a local farm or walk the local trails and check out the village's cultural monuments and learn about its history. You can also visit the Viking graves at Fekjo and the old houses at Geilojordet. Tobogganing is always popular, and you can also try: the heated outdoor pool, cinema, ice rink, shops, skiddooing, gym, night skiing, reindeer sledding, ice fishing, snowshoeing, dog sledding, sleigh rides, ice skating snow rafting and snowmobile safaris.
