The peaceful ski area is surrounded by beautiful scenery - low sweeping mountains, pine forests and colourful homesteads. Each village has its own characteristics, making Åre a resort that attracts several different types of visitor - including families, couples and young groups. Beginners should definitely consider heading to Åre for their holiday, with the runs, lifts and facilities all designed to suit learners. For total beginners, head to the rolling slopes at Duved and the gentle runs at Årebjörnen for plenty of easy skiing and confidence building. All areas offer excellent ski school tuition with English-speaking instructors. The Duved ski area is especially good for beginner snowboarders. There are terrain parks with pipes, jumps and boarder-cross in Tegefjall, Rodkullen and Årebjörnen ski areas, some of which are floodlit in the evenings. For intermediates
There is every kind of intermediate run you'd like here from easy blues to challenging reds. Try the long cruising descents at Tegefjall, or Mullfjallet in Duved. For more of a challenge head to the Åre Centre ski area.
For the advanced
There are a few challenging pistes here, one of them being the World Cup run. On the lower slopes the steepest pistes are in the Olympia area close to Åre village. Elsewhere you'll have to look off piste, it's a good idea to go with a guide who can lead you straight to the steepest terrain and pockets of powder. Ski school

Nightlife at Åre can be chilled out and quiet if that's what you're after, or lively and rowdy. Generally it is quieter during the week, and then really livens up on the weekend. There are a range of popular bars, and 15 night clubs, with Åre village being the après-ski capital. There are stylish cocktail bars, live music venues and traditional pubs. Other villages have a quieter selection of restaurants and bars. There are over 35 restaurants, including 17 up on the mountain, offering a range of food and drink, including fast food, Mexican and pizza, and hearty Scandinavian specialities.
Off the Mountain
Traditional and attractive, Åre village offers quaint and stylish shops, and there is a selection of off-mountain activities including: snow-mobiling, ice-climbing, wind-surfing on the snow, paragliding, hang-gliding, dog-sledding, ice-fishing on the frozen lake, tobogganing and visiting the Tannforsen frozen waterfall and ice caves. Many visitors take a trip to Stockholm, which is accessible from Are by train, for its' vibrant nightlife and extensive shopping. Getting there
By air
The closest airport is Åre Östersund Airport (80 km). There are domestic flights operating daily from Stockholm to Åre Östersund Airport (SAS and Flynordic), and a direct bus from the airport to Åre costs about 25 euro one way. There are also charter flights from London, Moscow, Helsinki and Copenhagen. You can also fly to Vaernes Airport outside Trondheim. There are International flights from London and Amsterdam.
Airport transfers
From the airport you can take the local train to Hell (takes about 3 minutes). In Hell you take the train "Mittnabotåget" direct to Åre Railway station. It's worth checking the time of departure from Hell as the train only runs twice a day (in both directions). Generally there's a morning train at around 9am and an evening train at around 5pm. SJ passenger train service has daily trains from Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö. There are also night trains. Veolia Transport have day trains from Sundsvall and from Trondheim (together with NSB). Veolia Transport also have night trains from Stockholm and Gothenburg during the winter. By car
The roads to Åre are good, from all over the country. If you drive from the middle of Sweden it will take about 6-8 hours, from Gothenbourg about 10-12 hours. |
