![]() ![]() About Saas FeeSaas-Fee is a beautiful resort snuggled into some of the highest mountains in Switzerland. The resort sits at the heart of the Saas-Valley, with thirteen four-thousand-metre mountain peaks encircling it like a shell - hence its nickname "The Pearl of the Alps". The beauty and jaw-dropping scenery has caused many to fall in love with the resort, despite constant comparisons with nearby Zermatt. The idyllic valley is home to four different villages, each with their own attractions. Saas-Fee is a traditional alpine village at the foot of the glistening glaciers, Saas-Grand is home to many off-mountain activities, Saas-Almagell is a charmingly friendly, family-orientated village and Saas-Balen is a true retreat for rest and relaxation, with the beautiful Fellbach stream roaring through the village. A medium-sized resort, Saas-Fee offers excellent snow due to high altitude and the glaciers, as well as glacier skiing in the summer. There's fantastic skiing for beginners and intermediates, along with a few choice black pistes - but advanced skiers and intermediates who love to clock up the miles may be better off at the larger Zermatt. Catch the underground railway to the shimmering Feegletscher glacier, visit the revolving restaurant at 3500 m and eat while looking out at the panorama of the surrounding mountain giants or pop in to the ice pavilion for a drink and to learn about how glaciers form. The après-ski scene is vibrant and bubbly, with a good number of bars, restaurants and pubs to suit all tastes in a resort that has maintained its authentic mountain charm. For beginners
This is a great place for beginners to learn. The first nursery slopes are perfectly situated in Saas Fee village, so children can ski and parents can sit in the bar watching. Once they find their feet they can move up the mountain to easy blues and greens.
For intermediates
Intermediates have a mass of runs all over the mountain, ranging from easy blues to testing reds. You'll find plenty of cruising runs, the longest being from Mittelallalin back into Saas-Fee, a drop of over 1700m. For the advanced
There are a number of good steep descents for advanced skiers and Saas-Fee is the end of extended Haute Route from Chamonix so you can try ski touring, but you'll need a guide. Some expert skiers may run out of challenging tracks. If you think this might be you, you might be better off at nearby Zermatt.
Ski school
The Swiss Ski and Snowboard school will help skiers of any level progress quickly, and Saas-Fee is a particularly good mountain to learn on. It's a good idea to book a mountain tour / off-piste day if you're a good intermediate or advanced skier to really make the most of this mountain. Try Mountain Life ans Weissmies. Après Ski
Nightlife in Saas-Fee is fun and lively, its not the raging party capital of the world, but there are more than enough bars, pubs and clubs to have a good night out. Over 100 restaurants serve food ranging from traditional specialities from the Valais to gourmet cuisine. You can get light bar snacks and pizzas at most times of the day and night. Off the Mountain
There's a lot to do when not skiing at Saas-Fee. A good place to start is the Saas Museum, where you can check out the history of the Saas Valley. Another random but fun museum is the Bakery Museum, revealing the history of Swiss baking. There guided tours of the villages in the Saas Valley are an awesome way to take in the beauty of the valley and see how the villages have retained their alpine charm. To see a bit more of the landscape, try a horse carriage ride through the beautiful surrounding area. The 5km toboggan run is a favourite but there's also fantastic ice climbing (the annual World Ice Climbing Championship is held in Saas Fee), indoor swimming pools, tennis courts, steam baths and saunas in the village, paragliding, sledging, Feeblitz bob sleigh run, winter walking, snow-shoe trekking, curling and skating, snow-tubing, coach excursion to Zermatt and the ice grotto.
