News - SkiingHolidays.com 10 Tips for Skiers this Season

We've put together an eclectic mix of Skiing Holidays'  top ten tips for skiers this season. Having fun on and off the slopes, while staying safe and saving a bit of your hard earned cash are the priorities.

1.    Stay small, save big

1.    Stay small, save big
Skiers looking to find a cheaper ski holiday this season may be tempted to opt for a ‘low cost’ alternative like Eastern Europe, only to find they have to compromise on quality. Fortunately many large resorts in the Alps share their slopes with smaller villages for a fraction of the price. Nendaz, a sister resort of Verbier in the Four Valleys of Switzerland is a standout, as is Vaujany which shares its piste with Alpe d’Huez, and the small town of Les Menuires in the Three Valleys. Save cash without sacrificing quality.

2.    Get your après on in Mayrhofen
For those looking to combine a great skiing holiday with a bit of a knees up then look no further than Mayrhofen in Austria. Widely regarded as one of the best après ski resorts in the world, you can start your après ski fun up the hill in one of the many Hüttes and then progress down to bars next to the Penken Gondola without having to drink and ski (which is never, ever a good idea).

3.    Become upwardly mobile, swap your transfer for a hire car
As planes and mountains don’t generally mix, you’ll find that resort transfer times can be quite long, and therefore expensive. Did you know that you can often book a hire car for the entire week for less than the cost of a private transfer? No more shared transfers, no more ski buses, no more waiting for other planes and no more wondering what the snow is like at the resort next door… Direct, private, mobile and flexible – bliss!

4.    Learn to ski in Courchevel 1650
Home of the award winning New Generation British ski school, Courchevel 1650 is slightly set apart from the centres and offers a slightly quieter place to learn to ski than its busier neighbours. If you’re travelling with a mixed group of skiers Courchevel offers easy access to the massive Three Valleys domain.

5.    Take a long weekend break to Chamonix
One of the worlds premiere ski resorts, Chamonix offers a great range of flexible accommodation options to fit the daily flights landing in Geneva, just an hour away. Wake up in the UK, grab an early flight, pick up your hire car and you could be on the slopes that same day. Be careful with that return flight though, Chamonix is also known for its fantastic après ski scene!

6.    Take out insurance and wear protection

A recent survey by SkiingHolidays.com revealed a third of all skiers have at one time been injured on the slopes so it is important that skiers take out specialist ski insurance before they travel. While you’re at it put on a helmet and wrist guards! A helmet can save your life, and wrist guards can prevent up to 25 per cent of all snowboarding injuries.

7.    Pack up the kids and head to Saas Fee
Saas Fee in Switzerland is a great resort, with range of features suitable for all the family. Saas Fee has dedicated a former piste into an area solely for tobogganing, a firm favourite for the kids. There’s also an ice rink, great nursery slopes and plenty of crèches to cater for families with children of all ages.

8.    Don’t forget your ski etiquette
Like learning your highway code, there is also a set of codes that skiers should adhere to while on the slopes as it helps prevent crashes and injuries on the slopes. Remember to respect others, stay in control, avoid stopping on the piste, give way when entering and exiting the trails and respect all signals and markings on the mountain.

9.    Guarantee snow by heading high
At the start and end of the season it’s important to ski higher resorts to guarantee yourself the best snow quality possible. It’s tempting to go for lower cheaper resorts, but it’s worth paying more to give yourself the best chance for snow. Resorts like Tignes, La Plagne, Val Thoren, Cervinia,  St Anton and Zermatt are considered safe bets for a snow sure skiing holiday.

10.    Pre-order your extras
By pre-ordering your ski extras, such as ski hire, lessons and lift passes you’ll be guaranteeing you get the best price. Tour operators can negotiate the best ‘bulk buy’ rates with suppliers, including savings of up to 35 per cent on ski hire. Lessons are also important to pre-book as they do sell out, so it’s best to reserve yourself a place.
