Set in the heart of the forest between Courchevel and Meribel, La Tania was originally dubbed La Tagna, which meant "the Bear's dwelling", a reference to the bears that lived in the Tarentaise forest until the start of the 20th Century. They suddenly disappeared in the 30's, no doubt hunted down by scared mountain residents, but others realised the beauty of the valley and created one of the most convenient ski villages for access to Les Trois Vallees skiing domain.
Architect Jacques Labro made sure natural materials and lots of wood were used to build the chalets, and the resort is surrounded by a beautiful Christmas tree forest. You'll notice a great community feeling here, and while it is a smaller family-friendly resort, the nightlife can really kick off with live music most nights and plenty of parties. It's traffic-free, with live music played most and aprés-ski happy hours and theme night parties taking place throughout the season.
The skiing links in to the massive 3 Valleys system - you're just two lifts away from either Méribel or Courchevel 1850. The stats for the area are massive - nearly 200 lifts with a capacity to carry 260,000 skiers per hour, 2500 hectares of groomed pistes some 600km in length with 293 marked runs and 130km of cross country tracks. There's also 1500 snow cannons, 70 piste bashers, 320 ski patrollers and over 1500 instructors to keep everyone happy.
There are now three runs down into the resort, a roller coaster blue straight down through the forest in to the resort, a wide red run with a consistent gradient down to the bottom gondola station plus a new green run winding down through the forest from the top gondola station in to the resort, a great skier/boarder cross track on a first run down in the morning.
The blue Folyères run from the top gondola station is now helped by 38 snow cannons and it's own snow making reservoir which were installed for the 2001/2 season along the entire length of the run - this has kept it open from the start to the end of the season ever since. New for 2008/9 will be snow cannons on the Bouc Blanc (red) and Boulevard des Arolles (blue) pistes above the gondola thus guaranteeing the link from 1850.

or intermediate skiers, a day's skiing / riding to Val Thorens and experiencing the whole Three Valleys is a must - only 4 (or 6) lifts away. Check out the lift passes and ski/ride guide pages. There is a huge choice of blue and red ski runs in the Courchevel valley, as well as the chance to explore further afield: into Meribel and beyond to St Martin de Belleville and Val Thorens. The best piste preparation is generally above Courchevel 1850: some of the runs can be very flattering.
Within the Courchevel valley there is an excellent selection of red and black runs. Just skiing all the black runs of Courchevel in one day will represent a challenge. Once you add in Meribel and Val Thorens the combined Trois Vallees offers a massive amount of skiing even for the best skiers and snowboarders.

Après Ski and Off the Mountain Activities
A great family resort, away from the hustle and bustle, La Tania still gets going in the evening, with a lot of fun bars playing live music. Pub Le Ski Lodge is the main bar and social centre of life in La Tania. Decent prices, good food and big party nights make this a great place to head to when you leave the slopes. Hotel Montana has a piano bar, and is good place to get away from the crowd and chill. Occasional live jazz acts add to the atmosphere. La Taiga (referred to as The Tiger) the upmarket lounge bar for the older more sophisticated crowd in La Tania - nice cocktails in a chill out place, but still a lively night on band and party nights. If your stomach is starting to rumble, The Ski Lodge is excellent value for money with big helpings and tasty pub food, La Taiga has great food upstairs, and if you're looking to treat yourself, Le Farçon (Pub L'Arbatt) is an upmarket restaurant with a Michelen star awarded in the past.
off the mountain
Check out the Tourist Office in La Tania, Méribel and Courchevel for details of snow-shoe walks, paragliding, indoor climbing, ice skating, 10-pin bowling, ice karting, dog-sledding and much more. Nightly sledging for the kids (and usually the adults after Aprés Ski) takes place on the floodlit Troika run in the centre of La Tania -head to one of the local ski shops to buy a sledge. There's also a luge sledging run at neighbouring Courchevel 1550 which is great fun at night with the 1550 Gondola staying open to get you up there on the floodlit run. For something quite different, try a full-on Olympic bob sleigh over in La Plagne that anyone can have a go on (for around £25). Take a relaxing dip in the pool at the Hotel Montana in La Tania or make the trip to the large leisure centre in nearby Méribel. La Tania has a cinema where you can catch recent film during French school holidays, and you can grab a face or body treatment, or Californian massage at Isis Beauté.

Usually you're going to arrive in either in Geneva, Lyon, Chambéry, or Grenoble airports. Turin Airport is also possible but at 4 hours and through the expensive Fréjus tunnel it's not really an option. There is also Annecy Airport where you can fly from Paris Orly Ouest.
