Exceptional value for money, well regarded English-speaking ski schools and increasingly developed facilities are drawing more and more UK skiers to Bulgaria. The ski areas may not share the vastness of the Alps, but the Bulgarian government is investing lots of money on upgrades, and you can get very cheap ski packages, cheap ski hire and lift passes here.

The food is basic, and can't compare with France and Italy, but is low-cost and plentiful. There's a fun après-ski atmosphere, with pumping bars and clubs that often stay open until the wee hours. Off the slopes, there's history to sink your teeth into- take a trip to the Rila Monastery, between Borovets and Bansko, an amazingly preserved Medievel structure. Also check out ancient fortresses, lakes, waterfalls, caves and mineral springs.

Bansko is a modern resort near the Glazane River; with 70 km of piste and a highest peak of 2914 m. Its infrastructure is increasingly contemporary, it has a good terrain park and fun après ski starting out in traditional Bansko Taverns. Borovets is Bulgaria's oldest winter resort, and it's largest. Huddled in pine woods, the winter is relatively mild, and beginners have lots to learn on. Après-ski drinks are refreshingly cheap - especially beer and spirits.

Not the most challenging region for experts, Bulgaria will suit you best if you are just setting out and can take advantage of the great ski schools, or intermediate looking for open terrain. Discover the unbelievable pleasure of slicing through snow on top of a towering mountain for the first time, without breaking the bank.

How to get to Bulgaria

Flying

The only airport to serve the ski resorts is Sofia (170 km), the capital city of Bulgaria. Flights on average take around 2.5 hours from the UK. It takes around 2 hours 30 minutes to drive to Bansko from Sofia. Skiing Holidays offers flights - accommodation or full package deals.

Train

The ski resorts in Bulgaria are not a place we would even consider taking the train. If you do decide to train, then be prepared for it to take a while!

Driving

If you're averse to flying and wish to visit Bulgaria by car, you're in for a long trip. Our recommendation would be to take a car ferry to Greece (Igoumenitsa)  and drive up from there.
