Austria's reputation as a skiing mecca continues to grow, as more and more skiers recognise it's wonderful ski attributes. You'll find traditional resorts, lively apres ski, wonderful snow, sweeping runs and cheaper prices than many other European ski areas. For that perfect mix of stunning scenery, rigorous nightlife, quaint villages and value for your buck - you can't beat Austria.

It's a world apart when you head to a ski resort in Austria - if you're picturing picturesque Tyrolean villages, amazing après-ski atmosphere, meaningful culture, warm hospitality and scenery straight out of The Sound of Music - then you'd be right. A ski-hard, party-hard ethic means that you'll have an incredible array of choices for evening fun when you leave the slopes. The party often starts in the mountain bars in the afternoon and carries on late into the night. The liveliest resorts draw young skiers and boarders from all over the world, to sample the favourite local après-ski drink, schnapps.

From large internationally famous resorts to picture postcard villages, Austria has over 600 areas where you can hit the slopes. St Anton am Arlberg is one of the most famous, loved by expert skiers who can't get enough of the powdery slopes, moguls, out-of-this-world off piste and some of the most raucous après-ski around. Kaprun draws you in with promises of the longest snow season, Soll is perfect for families and intermediate skiers and groups of mixed ability skiers will delight in the gentle beginner slopes and wildly challenging black terrain at Lech.

How to get to Austria:

Flying

Austria is well served by flights from all over the UK. The primary ski airports are Salzburg, Innsbruck and the Garman airports of Munich and Friedrichshafen. Skiing Holidays does great flight - accommodation deals where you can add a transfer or hire car from these airports to resort. See individual resorts for specific airport details.

Catching the train

Innsbruck has good rail connections to the rest of Europe, but taking the train from the UK is not overly easy. From Waterloo station, take the Eurostar to Paris, from where you can take a connecting overnight train from Gare de L'est to Munich, and then another connection to Innsbruck via the Eurocity train.

Driving

Driving from the UK is a pretty lengthy journey and not a popular option. You'll need to get a car ferry to the French port of Calais and then drive over 1,000kms. The highways between Calais and the Austrian Alps are of a high standard, but there are many tolls.
