A cluster of fabulous resorts, sunny weather, a snowboarders haven and possibly the world's longest black run - just a few things that make Le Grandes Rousses special.
The fifth largest ski domain in France, it is a genuine all-round area. Great beginner runs, good intermediate slopes, long black trails and various off-piste will be sure to tempt you.
The sunshine is a big attraction too - the national meteorological office says that the resort gets an average of 300 sunny days a year! Five resorts make up the area; Alpe d'Huez, Vaujany, Auris-en-Oisans, Oz-en-Oisans and Villard-Reculas. Alp d'Huez is the most well-known, a big vibrant resort with lots of shopping, things to do off the slopes, and a well-recognised snow park, half pipe and boardercross area. The efficient lift system, serving over 220km pistes ensures that Alpe d'Huez is rightly acclaimed to be one of the best resorts in France.
For beginners there are numerous runs to get you better quicker, and above the nursery slopes, 80- lifts access runs for all abilities. For the advanced skier, the Pic Blanc glacier offers challenging runs including the 16km black, la Sarenne which winds it way through a gnarly gorge.
It's a great choice for late and early season holidays because the snow can generally be relied on, and so can the sun! Auris-en-Oisans is a family-style ski in / ski out resort on the edge of a pine forest, Oz-en-Oisans is a picturesque resort that's the closes to Grenoble and the easiest to reach, Vaujany is beautiful, traditional and is opposite the stunning Grandes Rousses range. Villard-Reculas sits in the valley of the waters d'Olle in the heart of the Oisans Mountains, with amazing panorama.
