Les Gets has an alluring charm, with its steepled church, old style farmhouses and tree-lined slopes. The name "Les Gets" came from the local dialect words "gitte" or "giette" meaning the corridors used to send logs rapidly down the hillside, and still today wood is a big deal for the town. Chalets, crafts, wooden heating systems and much more all come from the forests which cover 2/3 of the area around the resort. Sitting at the base of the giant Portes du Soleil ski area, Les Gets means the chance to ski 650 km of pistes at a reasonable price.

The charming village has spectacular views of Mont-Blanc and is perfect for families, with good kids facilities and lots of gentle runs close by. The gondola that runs to La Chavannes will drop you at a snow-packed beginner area perfect for practicing; while intermediate have large cruising runs from La Ranfolly and from La Pleney down to Morzine. Experts will love day trips exploring surrounding resorts, especially the back of Mont-Chery.

The town has a generally relaxed, quiet atmosphere. Although a reasonably active nightlife can be found, it's not quite as raging as other resorts in the Alps. While is has kept its traditional alpine feel, it has also moved with the time, upgrading facilities and activities to those of a modern resort. The ski area is so big, the only problem you'll face is getting back to the resort in time for a cold drink.

More on Les Gets:

Les Gets for Different Ski Abilities

beginner skiers

They look after beginners well at Les Gets with good learner slopes and great ski schools, especially for kids. Try the beginner's area at the top of the La Chavannes gondola.

intermediate skiers

Intermediates have lots to do in Les Gets, and will be able to ski nearly all of Portes du Soleil as well. Close to the resort, try the "Blanchot" circuit around the Les Gets area which follows only green and blue slopes. When you're ready to venture further, try some of the great runs are from the top of Mont Chéry. For confidence-building reds runs, the Les Gets bowl is the place to go.

expert skiers

There's challenging off-piste galore for advanced skiers in the Chamoissiere and Nyon areas, as well as a number of demanding black runs including the Yeti mogul field. Mont Chery hides a black run reputed to be one of the hardest in the whole of the Portes du Soliel. Try skiing to Morzine via Avoriaz for runs such as "The Wall" and limitless off-piste.

Après Ski and Off the Mountain Activities

Après Ski

At the end of the day the bars, shops and restaurants are packed at Les Gets, but the Après-ski scene is a little more chilled than other resorts. That said, there is good selection of pubs playing live music and the couple of clubs mean you can dance away through the night. There are some particularly civilised venues here, like Les Gets has a few more civilized venues than many other small ski resorts. The stylish Bear (or Canadian) Bar above the Irish Bar, with its cosy alcoves. Other options: the Zebra bar, the Boomerang and L'Igloo nightclub. The good selection of restaurants serve French cuisine, crepes and fondue, and there are cheaper snack bar - style options.

off the mountain

Get out and explore the village when you need to slip off the ski boots for a day. A good place to start would be The Mechanical Music Museum, there's also a great collection of automated dolls and models at the Roger and Gallet automatons museum - kids will love it. At Christmas time the little ones can be welcomed into Santa Claus' world, the man himself will open the doors of his chalet, in the heart of an enchanted forest, where many little elves make the final preparations for the grand tour of chimneys on the 24th of December. There's the weekly market on Thursday mornings near the skating rink, and a cool heritage trail. Other things to try: guided mountain walks and snowshoeing, an ice rink, paragliding, dog sledding, hot air ballooning, ice diving, sky diving, snow mobiling, bowling, a cinema, a beauty salon and a wellness centre.
