Saas-Fee is a beautiful resort snuggled into some of the highest mountains in Switzerland. The resort sits at the heart of the Saas-Valley, with thirteen four-thousand-metre mountain peaks encircling it like a shell - hence its nickname "The Pearl of the Alps". The beauty and jaw-dropping scenery has caused many to fall in love with the resort, despite constant comparisons with nearby Zermatt. The idyllic valley is home to four different villages, each with their own attractions.
Saas-Fee is a traditional alpine village at the foot of the glistening glaciers, Saas-Grand is home to many off-mountain activities, Saas-Almagell is a charmingly friendly, family-orientated village and Saas-Balen is a true retreat for rest and relaxation, with the beautiful Fellbach stream roaring through the village. A medium-sized resort, Saas-Fee offers excellent snow due to high altitude and the glaciers, as well as glacier skiing in the summer. There's fantastic skiing for beginners and intermediates, along with a few choice black pistes - but advanced skiers and intermediates who love to clock up the miles may be better off at the larger Zermatt.
Catch the underground railway to the shimmering Feegletscher glacier, visit the revolving restaurant at 3500 m and eat while looking out at the panorama of the surrounding mountain giants or pop in to the ice pavilion for a drink and to learn about how glaciers form. The après-ski scene is vibrant and bubbly, with a good number of bars, restaurants and pubs to suit all tastes in a resort that has maintained its authentic mountain charm.
